Letting Go

Written By Anita Davis

Two years ago, while soaring suspended from a wire 45 meters above the lush vegetative jungle floor in Cancun, I had a mixture of emotions and e fear and excitement being the main ones.

My grip was tight, my eyes were tight, shut tight. Everything was tight as I feared for my life. However, what stood out most was my discomfort when I am not in control.

I stood in awe as I watched a teenage girl go before me.  It was fascinating how she dropped her hold on the reigns and let herself go completely. She sailed through the air towards the tower.  She looked so relaxed and free!!!!! At that moment, I thought to myself, I want to feel that…free!!!!!!!!

Many times in my Christian walk, I’ve had the opportunity to drop hold of the reigns and allow God to lead me according to His will.  I have taken advantage of that opportunity to trust him, and I’ve also chosen to disregard the Lord’s guidance. In those instances, I was anything but free! I was living according to what I felt was right for me, blinded to the impending danger that lay ahead because of my disobedience.

We’ve all heard the saying, “Let go and let God.”  This admonition speaks to a simultaneous action of releasing our will while yielding to His!  That act in and of itself is freeing.  When we realize our decision to obey the Gospel was our act of letting go of what we used to depend on and choosing to depend instead on God.  Following the Lord Jesus is giving up the freedom to live recklessly and deciding to be a bondservant for God.  I now know that being free in Jesus means becoming enslaved to the truth of His Word.  As the Bible says, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).

If you want to experience this freedom today, let go of the reigns, focus on God, and give Him control of your life.
